What Goes in a Good Tech Pack for Your Apparel Project

Tech Pack for Apparel Project

If you want your clothing made exactly how you picture it, you need a tech pack.

A tech pack is a document that you give to your manufacturer. It has everything they need to know about the product they have to make. This small document can be a game changer for you and your products because miscommunication can ruin everything.

What happens when you don’t give a tech pack? The manufacturer will have to do some things on their own by assuming. And, it may not seem like a big deal. But trust me, it can completely change your product.

Let’s look at what goes inside a good tech pack.

Why a tech pack matters

A tech pack helps you:

Keep your design consistent from the first sample to final production

Reduce mistakes and miscommunication with your manufacturer

Look professional when you approach manufacturers

Speed up the production process

Stay within your budget

Whether you’re a new designer or an agency managing client projects, a tech pack will save you time and money.

What should you include in your tech pack?

Here’s what to add so your manufacturer doesn’t have to guess:

  1. Cover Page

Think of this as your project’s introduction.

Include:

  • Your brand name
  • Style name and style number
  • A clear photo or simple sketch of the garment

This makes it easy for your manufacturer

Tip: A simple front-view image with color references is enough. No need to overcomplicate.

  1. Design Sketches

Add front, back, and side views of your design.

Include close-ups for details like pockets, zippers, or logos. Your sketches don’t need to be fancy, just clear and easy to understand.

  1. Measurement Chart

List clear measurements for the chest, length, sleeves, waist, and other key areas.

Add a size chart if you’re making multiple sizes.

Include tolerances (+/- you can accept) so your manufacturer knows what’s acceptable.

  1. Fabric and Materials

List the fabric type (like 100% cotton), weight, color codes, and any finishes you want.

Include trims like zippers, buttons, or drawstrings with clear details. This keeps your products consistent, especially for uniforms or custom apparel.

  1. Construction Details

Add notes on how you want your garment stitched and finished.

For example, if you want double stitching for durability or a specific type of seam, note it here.

  1. Labels and Tags

Include your brand label design, care label, and size label details.

Note where you want them placed on the product.

  1. Prints, Embroidery, and Artwork

If your design has prints or embroidery:

  • Attach artwork files (AI, PDF)
  • Show exact placement on your sketches
  • Note sizes and colors

Example: “Logo print, 3 inches wide, placed 2 inches below the neckline.”

  1. Packaging Instructions

Let your manufacturer know how you want your products packed. Include:

  • Folding instructions
  • Whether you want them in polybags (individually or in bulk)
  • Tag placement
  • Any special packaging like tissue paper or branded stickers

Example: “Fold with logo facing up, pack each piece in a clear polybag, 50 pieces per carton.”

9. Extra Notes

Add any additional instructions, such as:

“Send a photo sample before bulk production”

“Use eco-friendly packaging if possible”

“Pre-wash fabric before cutting to prevent shrinkage”

You can also add your production timeline if you have deadlines for sampling, approvals, or bulk production.
